Never mind the test of time for just a moment. Spare a thought for gamers of the Atari era. For the most part, they were at the mercy of management who just didn’t f’n get it. Who would look at something like this screenshot and, no matter how much money it made for them, roll their eyes and say “whatever.” While it was inevitable quality games made their way through, it also assured an environment where players would be bombarded with low quality games from media companies trying to cash-in. It wasn’t always purely cynical. The guys who made the Veg-o-Matic published games under the Xonox label, and those games felt ambitious. They weren’t good, but the effort was there.
